Botswana Society for Emergency Care (BSEC) is a recently revived professional organization focused on the improvement of all aspects of Emergency care from pre-hospital to in-hospital care. We aim to reach global standards of Emergency care within Botswana thus setting a trend in Southern Africa.

The specialty of Emergency Medicine is still nascent in Botswana. BSEC aims to aid in the building of the specialty by conveying various stakeholders for clinical care improvement, scientific advancement, policy debates, and fellowship.

The objects of the society are:

  • To promote and improve emergency care through teaching, research and education (e.g Continuing Professional Development and Continuing Medical Education credit courses).
  • To promote the specialty of Emergency Care.
  • To represent the specialty of Emergency Medicine and assist the Botswana Health Professions Council (BHPC) on specialty specific issues (e.g. accreditation of specialists).
  • To advocate for Emergency Care in Botswana.
  • To liaise with regional Emergency Medicine organizations such as the African Federation for Emergency Medicine and the Emergency Medicine Society of South Africa) for the purpose of education, research, and collaboration.
  • To create clinical guidelines and standards in the field of emergency care.
  • To lobby on behalf of BSEC members for the promotion of and maintenance of the profession.

AFEM - African Federation for Emergency Medicine

The African Federation for Emergency Medicine (AFEM), established in 2009, is committed to supporting universal access to high-quality emergency care across Africa, irrespective of geographical or circumstantial constraints. Our mission is centred on fortifying emergency care systems continent-wide through collaborative leadership, advocacy for prioritised emergency care, fostering partnerships, policy development, educational guidance, and research tailored to the African context.

AFEM

We are proud to serve as a unifying platform for national societies, organisations, and individuals across more than 50 countries and our regional groups strive to achieve wide representation throughout the continent that includes professionals from diverse emergency care disciplines such as physicians, nurses, pre-hospital care providers, residents, and students. Through our Francophone group, we actively support French-speaking projects, ensuring the inclusivity and broad reach of our initiatives to benefit as many African colleagues as possible.

Our initiatives underscore our unwavering dedication to advancing emergency care in Africa. These include certifying the WHO/ICRC Basic Emergency Care (BEC) course across the continent, promoting standards of care and training for emergency healthcare providers. Additionally, our journal The African Journal of Emergency Medicine (AfJEM) serves as a vital platform for disseminating research and knowledge in the field of emergency medicine across Africa.

Furthermore, we administer the Support a Delegate (Supadel) programme, which offers sponsorship opportunities for delegates from low-income nations to attend events such as the African Conference on Emergency Medicine (AfCEM). AfCEM is AFEM’s flagship scientific conference, providing a platform for healthcare professionals to exchange ideas, share research findings, and enhance their skills and knowledge in emergency medicine. Through initiatives like Supadel, we promote inclusivity and foster cross-border collaboration among emergency care professionals.

We extend a warm invitation for you to join us in Botswana for the 7th AfCEM, where we will continue our collaborative journey towards enhancing emergency care in Africa. For further information and updates, please visit the AFEM website at https://afem.africa/.
