Resuscitation Training

The University of Botswana Resuscitation Training Project (UBRTP) in partnership with the Initiative for Medical Equity and Global Health (IMEGH) offers BLS, ACLS and PALS courses. The courses will employ a blended online and in-person training model, allowing participants to complete pre-course material online. This innovative approach reduces course fees and ensures that in-person sessions focus entirely on practical skills and teamwork, maximizing the hands-on experience and effectiveness of the training.

Courses are certified by the National Health Care Provider Solutions (NHCPS), a American organization specializing in resuscitation training. The NHCPS curriculum is comparable to that of the American Heart Association but includes tailored content designed to address the unique challenges and circumstances faced in African settings.

EMSSA Core Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) Workshop

Discerption of the workshop: This workshop is based on the Emergency Medicine Society of South Africa  (EMSSA) Advanced ePOCUS Course. By empowering delegates to enhance their proficiency in POCUS, this workshop aims to advance medical practice not only on an individual level and to strengthen and grow the local POCUS faculty.

Learning objectives: The goal of this workshop is to provide delegates with a solid understanding of the basic physics and knobology necessary to practice POCUS, as well as the skills to perform and interpret basic POCUS investigations. The following will be covered during the workshop:

  • Introduction to Ultrasound Physics and Knobology,
  • Extended Focused Assessment in Trauma (EFAST),
  • Focused Abdominal Aorta Ultrasound (AAA),
  • Basic Cardiac Ultrasound (Echo)
  • Limited Compression Ultrasound (DVT),
  • Basic Lung Ultrasound (Lung) and
  • Ultrasound Guided Vascular Access (Vascular).

Faculty: The faculty will include experienced POCUS providers, featuring senior EMSSA ultrasound instructors, local POCUS instructors from the University of Botswana Emergency Medicine faculty, as well as international volunteer instructors.

Structure: The workshop will have two components – a theory-based component that will have to be completed by the delegates prior to the start of the workshop, and a practical component, that will take place on the day of the workshop. This approach allows for a ‘flipped classroom’ style of teaching, which maximises time for practical skill acquisition on the day of the workshop. During these sessions, delegates will have the opportunity to perform various POCUS investigations on live simulated patients. To get access to the pre-workshop learning material and online learning platform, delegates will have to book their places on the EMSSA online booking platform.

Who can attend: The anticipated audience for this workshop is any Emergency care practitioner who wants to kickstart their skills as a POCUS practitioner. No prior knowledge about point of care ultrasound is necessary, which makes this course very accessible.

Building paediatric Emergency Medicine research capacity in Africa

Discerption of the workshop: Large multi-centre studies are required to answer the “big questions” in acute care. In the last 20 years, there has been rapid growth in national and international research networks. There are now established paediatric emergency medicine (PEM) research networks in the USA (PEM-CRC and PECARN), Canada (PERC), Australia and New Zealand (PREDICT), the United Kingdom and Ireland (PERUKI), Europe (REPEM), Spain (RISE-Up / SPERG) and Central and South America (RIDEPLA). There is a strong collaboration between networks, coordinated through the global Paediatric Emergency Research Network (PERN).

Learning objectives:

  • Aims to lay a solid foundation for the development of a transnational research network to improve the care of children presenting to emergency departments and acute care across Africa.
